Manchester United’s second-choice goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has already told manager Ruben Amorim what he wants to hear as doubts over Andre Onana intensify.

United were held to a 2-2 draw against Lyon in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie earlier this week, with both of Lyon’s goals gifted by errors from Onana. Heat on the 29-year-old has strengthened in recent times and doubts over his long-term future at Old Trafford are growing.

The club’s current back-up goalkeeper is 26-year-old Turkey international Altay Bayindir, who has been at the club since his move from Fenerbahce in 2023. He only has seven appearances across all competitions to his name, but one of those came in the FA Cup against Arsenal earlier in the season.

In January, the third round tie at the Emirates ended all square following goals from Arsenal’s Gabriel and United’s Bruno Fernandes. The game went to penalties and all of United’s were scored, while Bayindir produced the decisive moment of the game as he saved Kai Havertz’s spot-kick.

Speaking to the BBC after the game, the goalkeeper said: “If you are not playing it doesn’t matter. You have to be ready every minute, every second. If you are a Manchester United player you have to be ready always.

“I am working every day. I am patient. I just want to help this great team. I want to make everyone happy for this great club.”

Onana’s recent performances have sparked speculation over whether he will be dropped to the bench for United’s upcoming Premier League trip to Newcastle, as well as the return fixture against Lyon next week. Should that be the case, Bayindir has already made it clear to the manager that he is ready and waiting to step up if called upon.
