Here’s what you need to know:
Manchester United will be on the hunt for a striker in the summer transfer window following their blunt attack this season
Manchester United are reportedly ready to overlook Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres and Napoli centre-forward Victor Osimhen in favour of a different target in the summer transfer window.
At least one new striker at the end of the season is a must for the Reds after a season which has been defined by a lack of quality in the final third. United sit 13th in the Premier League table with a goal difference of -4.
Ruben Amorim’s side have only scored 37 goals in the Premier League which is less than all of the teams above them as well as Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers who sit below United. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made no secret about the fact that money is tight at Old Trafford at present.
Nevertheless, United are thought to be determined to spend money in the summer to allow Amorim the best opportunity for success next season. According to ESPN, the Reds have decided to prioritise the signing of Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap to solve their goalscoring woes.
The former Manchester City academy star was sold to the Tractor Boys last summer for £20m and has settled well in Suffolk. He has bagged 12 goals in 30 Premier League appearances for the relegation-threatened club and this has led to speculation that he will leave Portman Road at the end of the season.
It is understood that City hold a £40m buyback option for Delap in the summer but are not looking to activate it due to Erling Haaland signing a new deal recently. However, they still hold a 20 per cent sell-on clause which will be activated on Ipswich’s profit.
Therefore, if United were to buy Delap for £40m, City would receive £4m of that fee. As mentioned, United have been linked with moves for the likes of Gyokeres and Osimhen at the end of the season.
Gyokeres has reportedly been pushed down the pecking order due to his potential price tag of £85.4m and Arsenal’s interest in the centre-forward. Osimhen could also command a substantial fee, particularly with PSG thought to be keen on his services.
Chelsea have been credited with Delap interest too but at this stage, per ESPN claims, it is United who are leading the way.
