Manchester United icon Eric Cantona has delivered his biggest verdict on the Glazer family yet by becoming co-owner of FC United of Manchester.

FC United was formed on the back of the Glazers’ takeover at United in 2005, offering supporters an alternative option. Since then, the club has grown and their stadium is around seven miles away from Old Trafford.

Earlier this month, FC United and The 1958, a United fan group, joined together to protest against the Glazer ownership during the Northern Premier League Premier Division clash with Stockton Town.

Outside the ground, flares were let off in the red of FC and United as well as green and yellow, the colours of United’s original name, Newton Heath. Anti-Glazer chants were sung by fans with a large banner reading: ‘GLAZERS OUT’ was visual from the stands.

Now, Cantona has joined forces with FC United by becoming co-owner of the football club. Following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Mickleover, the club posted a video of the Frenchman signing his contract.

“The Cantona family, we are all members of United FC. All the people from all around the world should be members of United FC because it’s a great club,” he said.

Cantona’s official involvement in FC United comes after previously suggesting fans join together to drive out the Glazers. In an interview with The Athletic in 2022, Cantona suggested a fan ownership model at Old Trafford – something that is present at FC United.

“Yes, maybe [it is time for them to go],” he said. “I thought about something also. This club has on social media hundreds of thousands of fans. If they create an application today saying that 50 per cent of the club can be sold, then why should you have one person or two people who invest £500million?

“Instead, you can have hundreds of millions of people who spend 10 euros, 20 euros, 100 euros, 1,000 euros, and 50 per cent of the club is owned by the real fans of Manchester United.

“With social media now, you would do that like this. But they did not want me to be the president of the club! They did not want me! And the fans have to know that I went and travelled to Manchester to give them the opportunity to succeed in the next decades. And they did not want it.”
