Barcelona icon Lionel Messi’s contract at David Beckham’s MLS club Inter Miami expires at the end of this year

Lionel Messi is reportedly close to agreeing a new deal with Manchester United legend David Beckham’s MLS franchise Inter Miami.

After leaving Barcelona and a troublesome spell at PSG, Messi made the move to the United States to finish his career closer to home.

His switch to Miami saw the likes of Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez join the Argentinian maestro across the pond to see out their careers.

The 37-year-old Herons captain has started the new MLS season in fine form with eight goals and three assists to his name in just nine appearances but there has been a lingering concern for Beckham.

Inter’s owner is fully aware that Messi’s current agreement with Miami is due to expire on New Year’s Eve and he would become a free agent in 2026 if a new deal is not signed.

However, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein, the expectation is that Messi will agree an extension at the club.

It is understood talks between Messi and the Herons are at an ‘advanced stage’ and should he agree to the new contract, he would lead Inter Miami into a new era at Miami Freedom Park which is due to open in 2026.

Earlier this week, Miami’s managing owner Jorge Mas told FDP Radio Miami that: “The stars are aligning for something great, for a beautiful future for the club and for Lionel. It’s solely his decision.

“I expect that within 60-90 days we’ll have to determine all of this. My hope has always been — and everything we’re doing — is to see Messi play at our new stadium in 2026. Hopefully, that happens.”

It is reported, according to Capology, that Messi earns $230,769 (£176,635.21) per week for an annual salary of $12m (£9.19m).
