Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was left at home on Sunday as the team lost to Newcastle, with his understudy Altay Bayindir failing to put in a convincing argument to succeed him in his absence – and the calls for a transfer solution from fans in the Manchester Evening News comments section have only grown.

Onana was given a break by Ruben Amorim after difficulties on and off the pitch, having made high-profile errors in the Europa League game against Lyon last week. Manchester United could add a new goalkeeper to their summer transfer shopping list if Amorim feels that he won’t improve.

There are highly-rated goalkeepers around Europe available for a range of prices, and United’s summer activity will be influenced by who they are able to sell. Amorim’s fellow countryman Diogo Costa, playing at Porto has been courted by many top clubs, while Real Madrid’s second-choice Andriy Lunin has proven his chops when Thibault Courtois has been unavailable for selection.

Some fans would start their search for a new goalkeeper closer to home. Reader Boysof66 says: “Pickford or Ramsdale would be good choices, haven’t seen much of the others apart highlights but knowing the way we do business, it’s likely that we’ll choose the wrong one. But the brutal truth is that any of them would be an improvement on Onana.

“He’s certainly the worst keeper to get an extended run that I’ve seen in over 60 years supporting United. Bayindir should now be getting an extended run and not just one game, but we’ll see what happens, I don’t have much faith in Amorim having the courage to do the right thing here.”

Commenter MadMonk thinks that youth could be the way forward: “Some of those listed are just plain overrated – Lunin and Costa foremost. Costa has been hyped up for a long time but doesn’t seem to do anything special and is error prone (two of the United goals at Porto this season). If we were after a ready made keeper I’d look at Maignan from Milan, but he will be pricey and seems injury prone.

“Of the up and coming keepers, they would need a good look at Trubin, Suzuki, Garcia, Chevalier amd Senne Lammens, but they need the price to be reasonable as well. £40m for Suzuki is double what anyone should be paying for him. I don’t particularly rate him but Ramsdale at £15-20m would be a relatively safe short term option if they can’t get someone they really want, Pickford should be out of the reckoning as his price will be way above his ability.”

Saihulud writes: “Costa, Suzuki, Lunin are overrated. Chevalier is good. Also Wigan’s Tickle and Burnley’s Trafford. And then Vitek doing really well in Austria.”

United academy graduates would be also be suitable transfers, according to Thabomash: “Matej Kovar and Dean Henderson who were released by Erik Ten Hag are also good replacements… do we have a buyback clause?”
