Xavi Simons has been a man in demand after his impressive showings at Euro 2024 with Manchester United reportedly looking to make a move for the RB Leipzig midfielder
Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Dutch sensation Xavi Simons. The 21-year-old, once dubbed Jurgen Klopp’s ‘dream’ Liverpool signing, graduated from La Masia and signed with PSG in 2019.
He made his mark during loan spells at PSV Eindhoven and RB Leipzig before making a permanent switch to the Bundesliga in January.
Simons showcased his talent at Euro 2024, outclassing many opponents including Arsenal’s Declan Rice. His performances confirmed why top English clubs had been pursuing him for some time.
Now, it appears that the player Klopp was more than keen to bring to Anfield is back on Old Trafford’s radar.
The Mail reports that Simons has re-emerged as a potential summer target for United. However, any move may depend on whether the club can secure Champions League qualification by winning the Europa League.
It’s believed that contact has been maintained between both parties, with United having been linked with Simons in the past, even during his £42.5million move to RB Leipzig in January – a figure that could rise to around £70m with add-ons.
This renewed interest from United comes a year after German publication BILD reported that former Liverpool manager Klopp – now Red Bull’s global head of soccer – was ‘desperate’ to sign the player during his time at Anfield, describing it as a ‘dream’ acquisition.
During the Euro 2024 semi-final, England faced a formidable challenge from the Netherlands, with Xavi Simons delivering an outstanding performance that caught everyone’s attention. The young midfielder wasted no time making his mark, scoring just seven minutes into the match.
Despite England securing a dramatic 2-1 victory with goals from Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins, Simons’ display earned him widespread acclaim.
Erik ten Hag, who was managing United at the time and is a compatriot of Simons, didn’t hesitate to praise the player’s performance. “I enjoyed Xavi Simons in that game (against England). The drive he has, and the passion with which he conquers balls and recognises situations are top,” Ten Hag commented before being dismissed from his role at United.
He further admired Simons’ intensity, saying, “His enormous drive as well. That is almost un-Dutch. I think you can see that he was trained abroad. He almost has a southern European doggedness in his game.”
Rumours are swirling that Simons could be heading to Old Trafford as new manager Ruben Amorim looks to revamp his struggling squad. With United currently languishing in 14th place in the Premier League after only 10 wins this season, their hopes of playing in Europe next year hinge on winning the Europa League.
