Manchester United’s dramatic comeback win over Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final means there’s a chance 11 Premier League teams could qualify for European competitions next season.

Harry Maguire scored a late winner to send Ruben Amorim’s men into the last four of the competition after United came from 6-4 down to win 7-6 on aggregate.

The win keeps their hopes of a return to the Champions League alive, with the winners of the Europa League sealing a spot in next season’s edition. They face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-final and could lock horns with Tottenham in the final should they progress.

Should Amorim lead United to glory in Bilbao at the end of the season, it could result in something the Premier League has never seen before. Normally, England would receive four Champions League places, two for the Europa League and one in the Conference League play-off stage – so seven in total.

Next season, they are already guaranteed to have five places due to the federation’s UEFA coefficient average. There could be a sixth team in the Champions League if United or Tottenham win the Europa League.

Both players are sat in the bottom half of the Premier League meaning becoming champions in Europe’s second competition will see them join the top five in the Champions League next season.

There is also a situation where a seventh Premier League team could qualify, although it is unlikely. Should Mikel Arteta’s men drop out of the top five, they are currently second, and win the Champions League, they would return to the competition next term.

In the Europa League, Crystal Palace would qualify if they win the FA Cup. Aston Villa, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest, the other three semi-finalists, are all expected to finish in a position in the league to qualify for Europe.

Chelsea remain the favourites to win the Conference League and will qualify for the Europa League if they win the competition. However, Enzo Maresca’s men are in the top four at the moment but should they drop out of the race, there could be three English teams in the Europa League.

So it means that, if everything falls into place, Fulham (through their seventh-placed position) will join Palace (through their FA Cup win) and Chelsea (as Conference League winners) in the Europa League.

Finally, the Conference League spot sits with Newcastle United for their Carabao Cup success. However, should Eddie Howe’s side upgrade to the Champions League or Europa League through the Premier League, the place in the Conference League would fall to the leading team in the league not already qualified for the Champions League or Europa League.

That would give Brighton, the team in ninth, a spot in the Conference League as the highest non-qualified team.
