Manchester United have dropped an early team news hint that Alejandro Garnacho could be set to start in this afternoon’s Manchester derby with Manchester City.

Garnacho has been in the headlines this week after his performance in the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest. The forward played the full duration at the City Ground, but put in another blunt display.

He registered six attempts at goal, but he failed to make a difference with his decision-making, yet again, being questioned. After the game, Ruben Amorim conceded that the 20-year-old was “not that good” in the final third. “He’s making everything, he’s trying sometimes,” the United head coach said.

“You have one day [where] you are doing the right things but, in the final third, you are not that good. But it can happen. That can happen in the game.

“The most important thing for me is when he needs to run back, he’s running back.

“Of course, we want a player that has it one-against-one. Sometimes he’s trying too much, he has (Patrick) Dorgu to make a movement, but I think he wants to help the team in doing his best.

“Sometimes he doesn’t always make the best choice, but you can point to any player today.”

Today, United return to action with City visiting Old Trafford. It’s the first derby since the 2-1 win in December, which is remembered for Amorim’s decision to drop Garnacho and Marcus Rashford from the matchday squad altogether.

That isn’t expected to be the case this time around, and United have also dropped an early hint that the Argentina international will be involved. Garnacho was the player selected to be the face of United’s social media infographic on Sunday morning.

Usually, that means the player will be involved in some capacity. Garnacho is now in-line to start against City with Amorim’s options up top without him in the starting XI.

Predicted United predicted XI vs City: Onana; Mazraoui (De Ligt, if fit), Maguire, Yoro; Dalot, Ugarte, Fernandes, Dorgu; Garnacho, Zirkzee; Hojlund.
