Quick overview:
Ruben Amorim faces a dilemma over what to do about Man United’s goalkeeping situation after being told it could cost £60million to fix during the summer transfer window
Ruben Amorim has been urged to sort out Manchester United’s goalkeeping crisis, despite being warned it could cost £60million to fix.
Andre Onana was dropped for United’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday following his errors in their 2-2 draw with Lyon in the Europa League. Altay Bayindir deputised in his place.
But he also came in for criticism after his misplaced pass led to Newcastle’s fourth goal. Amorim now faces a conundrum over what to do about United’s current problems in goal, with neither Onana nor Bayindir covering themselves in glory this season.
Former Red Devils shot-stopper Ben Foster believes that only bringing in a new No. 1 in the summer will solve the issue, despite the significant financial implications. He also suggested Amorim will need to bring in as many as 10 fresh faces during the transfer window to transform the club’s fortunes.
“United are in such a bad place,” Foster said on his ‘Fozcast’ podcast. “They need a whole revamp of the squad. Realistically, we’re talking six, eight or even 10 players.
“Now they have to get a new goalie and where are you going to get a new goalie from? If you want a proper goalie in the Premier League to be able to challenge and to do well, you’re paying £50m or £60m.
“If you look at the top goalies in the world, you’re looking at Thibaut [Courtois], Emi Martinez and Alisson. They’re known as the top goalies in the world because they very rarely make mistakes.
“They make unbelievable saves, they’re confident and they come out and they help the team. But it’s about not making mistakes and with Onana this season, we’re into double figures.”
Amorim said Onana needed time to “disconnect” after omitting him from the matchday squad for the clash with Newcastle. Explaining why he made a change in goal, United’s head coach told Sky Sports: “Sometimes, you have to push the player to play again.
“Sometimes you have to let him disconnect a little bit. Tomorrow, he will be in training to prepare for the next one, so I felt that it was a good time for Andre to disconnect.”
Clubs from Saudi Arabia reportedly hold an active interest in Onana, despite the intense spotlight on his performances. Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the ex-Inter Milan keeper’s future, claiming that Saudi Pro League sides have maintained their interest from two summers ago.
Meanwhile, Foster expanded on his views on United’s goalkeeping situation during an appearance on talkSPORT. Despite acknowledging Onana’s poor form, he said Amorim may have to back the Cameroonian in the short term.
“I just feel that Onana and Bayindir are really struggling at this moment in time,” he said. “Onana has made quite a few big mistakes and the two he made in Europe in the week were horrible – his confidence is shot.
“I think the manager was probably right in doing what he did but at the same time he needed a good performance from Altay Bayindir and he didn’t get it.
“If Bayindir had a good game, what Amorim would’ve said after the game would’ve been completely different. He would’ve insinuated he would be playing the game on Thursday.
“But as it went, I think what he’s realised is that Bayindir probably isn’t up to the level too. He needs to get back behind Onana and say that taking him out of the firing line was just a tiny little blip.”
