A man climbed up onto the roof of a house after running away following a police pursuit, it’s been revealed.

Greater Manchester Police have released further details after issuing in a statement in relation to the incident on Saturday night in the Blackley area of north Manchester.

As reported, police closed a section of a road – Quilter Grove in Blackley village – over a man stood on a roof of a row of terraced houses. Emergency services including the fire service and paramedics were scrambled to the scene just before midnight.

Mobile phone video clips posted on social media showed the man walking along the middle ridge of a roof then grabbing a chimney and sitting down on the tiles.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed two fire engines were sent to the scene and the man was brought safety down. A 37 year-old man remained in custody under arrest on Sunday, the force added.

In a statement, GMP said: “At around 11pm yesterday (12/04/2025), officers pursued a vehicle that failed to stop.

“A man, suspected to be the driver of the vehicle, vacated it, ran, and climbed onto a roof on Quilter Grove in Blackley. Road closures were put in place, and with support from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, the incident was brought to a safe resolution within an hour.

“A man – aged 37- was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and burglary. He remains in police custody.”

North West Ambulance Service paramedics were also there and the Manchester Evening News understands the man came down voluntarily after more than an hour. It’s understood he was assessed at the scene by paramedics. The fire service said it supported police with lighting and equipment and were at the scene for around 70 minutes after an initial 999 call came in at 11.50pm.

Police negotiators were also called out, as a police helicopter circled overhead. It’s understood the man was helped to safety by fire crews on an aerial ladder platform positioned up to the roof. No further details have been revealed.
