Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane believes Manchester City were right to concede a penalty against Aston Villa despite the Irishman admitting that the Blues would be fuming with the decision.

City got off to a great start after Bernardo Silva’s strike could not be stopped by Emi Martinez. However, with less than 20 minutes on the clock, the scores were tied when Jacob Ramsey was adjudged to have been fouled by Ruben Dias in the penalty area.

Initially, referee Craig Pawson waved away appeals but VAR John Brooks called the official to the monitor where he subsequently overturned his decision. The incident was then shown in the stadium which was met by jeers from the home supporters.

Pep Guardiola was so irate at the decision that his protestations led to him being booked. Marcus Rashford would comfortably convert the spot kick to level up the contest.

Heading into the Sky Sports studio at half-time, Keane was asked for his opinion on the penalty and he agreed with the officials’ decision. “I know City are fuming, he gets a little slight touch but he still takes him out,” the ex-United man said.

“They are making a point and everyone is talking about his arms, holding his arms up, but he catches him, he does catch him. He has got no chance of getting the ball.

“Pep is clearly frustrated, the fans are here. Villa deserved a good reaction after going a goal down but I think it is a penalty.”

After the decision, the Premier League Match Centre released a statement as to why Villa were awarded the penalty. They explained: “VAR checked the referee’s call of no penalty to Aston Villa for a challenge by Dias on Ramsey – and deemed there was a clear trip and recommended an on-field review.

“The referee overturned the original decision and awarded a penalty to Aston Villa.”
