Phil Foden could miss Manchester City’s game with Crystal Palace to add to the club’s injury problems. The playmaker came off in the Manchester derby with a knock that saw him limp down the tunnel, and that could rule him out of Saturday’s match.

Pep Guardiola will have to wait and see whether his situation has got any worse as they take on a bogey team who are looking to further dent their chances of making the Champions League. Palace earned a 2-2 draw at home in the reverse fixture and have been excellent under Oliver Glasner.

City already have John Stones, Manu Akanji, Nathan Ake, Rodri and Erling Haaland missing most of the rest of the season. The manager spoke last week about Akanji returning soon, but nobody is close enough to be considered for the Palace game.

Foden has endured a difficult season, falling from the giddy heights of last year when he was the best player in the Premier League and swept the individual honours as well as picking up a sixth Premier League winners’ medal. Guardiola has regularly defended him, and again laughed off the idea that replacing the 24-year-old would solve all of the team’s problems.

“We will all try to help him,” he said. “If the team had played better, he’d have played better.

“It’s not about choosing a hypothetical player and selling Phil and all our problems are gone. If the team plays better, the individual players are lifted.

“There are few players in the world who can lift a team. We have to understand as a team what we have to do and the buttons that we had that in the past were always so precise and this season we struggled. Last game was a prime example.

“This is what I try to recover these seven games, the FA Cup and the Club World Cup for next season.”
