Manchester City are sweating over news of Ederson’s injury after the goalkeeper was forced off in the Premier League win over Palace
Manchester City are waiting to determine the extent of Ederson’s injury amid concerns he could miss most of the run-in. The Brazilian had to come off against Crystal Palace after feeling discomfort in his groin when he passed to Ilkay Gundogan in the second half.
It has been the second season in a row where Ederson has been troubled by niggling injuries that have cost him game time. He was forced off in a number of matches last season, including the penultimate fixture at Spurs where Stefan Ortega stepped up to deputise with a title-winning save from Son Heung-min.
Ortega has made 11 league appearances this season compared to Ederson’s 22 and Saturday was the goalkeeper’s fourth injury of the season. It appears to be a recurrence of the groin problem he suffered against Nottingham Forest in March, where he played on but conceded a tame goal before missing the next match and pulling out of the Brazil squad.
Ederson had scans at the City Football Academy this week to assess his injury and while the club are waiting on the full results early worries are that he could be sidelined for a number of weeks with the issue.
With four games coming up in the next fortnight starting with Everton on Saturday and including the FA Cup semi-final, City may have to rely on Ortega as they look to secure Champions League football for next season.
While Ederson is unlikely to make the trip to Goodison Park, Phil Foden could be involved as he works his way back from the knock he picked up against United at Old Trafford.
Foden was taken off in the second half against United and limped down the tunnel before missing Saturday’s win over Crystal Palace.
However, his issue is not thought to be too serious and he could return to the matchday squad as early as Saturday. That would leave Erling Haaland as the only injured attacker in Guardiola’s squad, with the bulk of their absentees coming at the back.
City have been plagued by injuries all season, with Rodri suffering an ACL tear in September and all four senior centre-backs getting injured within a few days in October. That sent the form of the team spiralling and they have barely been able to recover.
Guardiola is currently without three of his four centre-backs, and has been playing attacking midfielders in both full-back roles. City’s defensive options were depleted in the January window when captain Kyle Walker asked to leave, although they did bring in two new centre-backs to reinforce the backline.
