A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after an Audi smashed into some railings, leaving a trail of debris in Rochdale.

Emergency services raced to the junction of Bolton Road and Marland Old Road at around 7:30pm on Tuesday (April 15). Pictures from the scene showed the damaged dark coloured Audi A3, which had ploughed into some railings before the car was left spinning into the roadside. A wheel was also sent flying into a nearby bus stop near the Tesco supermarket.

Police said a man in his 20s has now been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, with enquiries ongoing into the one-vehicle collision.

Residents in the area took to social media to express their shock over the crash.

“Right opposite my house, part of the car hit my next door neighbours window,” one person wrote on social media. As another said the car ‘smashed into the railings’ after being driven at speed.

“My neighbour told me a car part hit his front room window, it’s not smashed but it’s enough to scare you I would imagine,” another local told the M.E.N.

On Tuesday evening, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly after 7:30pm this evening (Tuesday 15 April), two fire engines from Rochdale Community Fire Station was called to attend a road traffic collision involving one vehicle and street furniture on Manchester Road, Rochdale.

“Crews arrived quickly and worked alongside Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe. Firefighters were in attendance for around half an hour.”
