Manchester United return to Europa League action tonight, with Ruben Amorim’s side travelling to France to take on Lyon in the first leg of their quarter-finals clash.

After drawing 1-1 in the first leg, a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick helped United to a 4-1 win against Real Sociedad at Old Trafford, with Amorim’s side winning 5-2 on aggregate to book their spot in the quarter-finals. Lyon beat FCSB 7-1 on aggregate to set up the quarter-final clash with United, with the French side starting to pick up a good run of form after a slow start to the season.

The Europa League is United’s best chance of earning Champions League football next season, with Amorim’s side 13th in the Premier League and 15 points off the top five with just seven games to go. Kobbie Mainoo is expected to be available for selection again after returning to training, while the Lyon clash comes too early for Matthijs de Ligt. So, how could United fare in the Europa League quarter-finals first leg tonight? Let’s take a look…

Lyon vs Man United score predicted

To complete this simulation, we used EA FC 25 and updated the squads with the latest injuries and suspensions.

We predict that the hosts could line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with their starting XI as follows: Perri; Maitland-Niles, Mata, Niakhate, Vinicius; Tessmann, Matic; Cherki, Tolisso, Almada; Mikautadze.

We predict that United could set up in a 3-4-2-1 formation, with their line-up as follows: Onana; Yoro, Maguire, Mazraoui; Dalot, Casemiro, Ugarte, Dorgu; Garnacho, Fernandes; Hojlund.

The first half was extremely even in France, with the hosts having more of the big chances in the first half. Andre Onana made some big saves to deny Lyon from taking the lead, and with 42 minutes on the clock, it was United who went into the lead.

Rasmus Hojlund made it 1-0 to United

A high press from Rasmus Hojlund forced Clinton Mata into giving up possession deep in his own half, with his failed clearance falling to Casemiro. The Brazilian picked out Hojlund’s bursting run forward with a simple through ball, and despite his first shot being blocked by the covering defender, the striker fired home on his second attempt to make it 1-0.

Lyon looked dangerous whenever they ventured forward, and the man leading those attacks was Rayan Cherki, with the winger levelling the score in the second half with a fantastic curling effort from the edge of the box. The goal handed the hosts a huge momentum boost, and in the 84th minute, an error gifted Lyon the lead.

Thiago Almada made it 2-1 to Lyon

Some neat footwork from Thiago Almada saw the Argentine roll the ball through Diogo Dalot’s legs before surging down the left flank and breaking into the box. The forward fired a tame shot Onana’s way, but the goalkeeper made a mess of it as he spilt the ball into his own net, despite Leny Yoro’s best efforts to get back and clear the ball.

Amorim’s side were unable to find an equaliser late on, meaning United headed back to Old Trafford behind on aggregate.
