Olympique Lyonnais have suffered a potential major injury blow ahead Thursday’s night Europa League first leg clash with Manchester United.

United travel to the Groupama Stadium for the first leg of their quarter-final clash in midweek. Ruben Amorim’s men are one of the favourites to win Europe’s second competition, but they come into the last-eight clash with heavy pressure.

With the club poised to record their worst-ever Premier League finish, United’s only realistic hope of securing European football for next season rests on them lifting the Europa League trophy in Bilbao on May 21.

After knocking Real Sociedad out in the previous round, United take on Ligue 1 side Lyon in what’s set to be a thrilling two-legged tie. And while United are suffering their own injury problems, Lyon have also been dealt a significant one just days before the first-leg.

Forward Ernest Nuamah was forced off after just seven minutes into their 2-1 win over Lille on Saturday. The 21-year-old suffered an injury to his knee early in the game and was replaced by Rayan Cherki.

In the short aftermath of the game, reports in France have suggested the Ghanaian has suffered a serious injury, with L’Equipe indicating there are fears of a torn cruciate ligament injury, although that has yet to be confirmed.

Nuamah will undergo medical tests today (Sunday) ahead of Thursday night’s match. His absence will be a blow with Paulo Fonseca already without talented winger Malick Fofana.

After the final whistle, Cherki, who scored the winner against Lille, sent a message of support to Nuamah with a plea ahead of the visit of United. “A big thought for Ernest,” he said. “I know it’s not easy to get injured, and come back to us quickly.

“A speedy recovery. We’re waiting for you impatiently because we need you.”
