Quick overview:
The latest Man Utd news following their dramatic Europa League quarter-final second leg win vs Lyon.
Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki has sent a message for the first time since the club’s defeat to Manchester United in their high-octane Europa League showdown.
United earned a dramatic 5-4 victory over Lyon in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday night. Goals from Manuel Ugarte, Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire secured a place in the semi-final for United.
Ruben Amorim’s squad were trailing 4-2 going into the final minutes of the contest, with Cherki among those on the score-sheet in extra-time. The France U21s international scored in both legs of the quarter-final vs United, but he still ended up on the losing side.
Less than 24 hours after Lyon’s defeat at Old Trafford, Cherki has posted a message on Instagram. The 21-year-old emphasised the club’s focus will now be on facing rivals Saint-Etienne in Ligue 1 this weekend.
“Disappointed with the scenario, but proud of my team and my club,” wrote Cherki on Instagram.
“We’re going to raise our heads and get into derby mode.”
Cherki’s message comes amid reports in recent days which have claimed United have an interest in signing Cherki this summer. The forward is reported to be available for around £25million with United among a host of clubs that are reported to be interested in completing a deal when the transfer window opens.
After United’s win over Lyon, they will now meet Athletic Bilbao in the semi-final of the Europa League, which will take place next month. Amorim’s men will travel to Spain for the first leg on May 1, before returning to Old Trafford for the second leg a week later on May 8.
