Latest Manchester United news as Andre Onana’s comments on Lyon ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash bring about a reaction from the home crowd

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was met with a hostile reception by Olympique Lyonnais supporters inside the first couple of minutes of Thursday night’s Europa League tie in France.

Onana has been in the headlines over the past 24 hours after his comments about Lyon. After the goalless draw with Manchester City, Onana was asked about United’s Europa League quarter-final with Lyon and said: “I think we are better than them, we just have go there and show who we are.”

The goalkeeper’s comments were met with a sarcastic reply from former United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who plays for Lyon. Speaking in the pre-match press conference, he said: “I don’t know, to say that, you need to have cover for something like that. Onana? Pfttt.

“You know, I respect everyone, but to say that, then you need to give an answer. If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history, you need to take care of what you’re talking about.

“If David de Gea, Peter Schmeichel or Edwin van der Sar say that, I would question myself, but if you are statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United modern history, then he needs to show that before he says, so we will see.”

On Thursday, Onana was greeted to a volatile reception by the Lyon fans inside the stadium when he arrived at the Groupama Stadium. After the first-leg kicked off in France, Onana’s first touch was then met by jeers from the packed out stadium.

Twenty-five minutes later, Onana’s words came back to haunt him when he made another mistake that led to a goal. Thiago Almada’s free-kick from the left somehow made its way into the back of the net.

“It’s a goalkeeping error,” Robbie Savage said on TNT Sports. “It’s a good ball in, great area, is Onana anticipating a touch?

“We’ll see it here, everyone looks onside there, it’s a terrible goalkeeping error, it bounces just before him, he’s got to save that, it’s a poor goalkeeping error. It looks like a good delivery, terrible goalkeeping.”
