A lorry driver has been fined £600 after police discovered that they had driven too much.

The heavy goods vehicle (HGV) was stopped by police on the M62 near Manchester. Greater Manchester Police then fined the driver for three separate offences.

This followed a tachograph examination. Tachographs record information about driving time, speed and distance.

They are used to make sure drivers and employers follow the rules on drivers’ hours.

The rules that apply to goods vehicles depend on the weight of your vehicle, the country you’re driving in and what you’re using the vehicle for.

The GB (Great Britain) domestic drivers’ hours rules apply to most passenger-carrying vehicles and goods vehicles that do not have to follow the EU rules.

They apply in England, Wales and Scotland. There are limits to how long a driver can spend driving a vehicle each day with rest periods required over the course of a week.

Drivers must not drive for more than 10 hours in a day and must not be on duty for more than 11 hours in any working day.

Breaks must also be taken during each working day. Hours must be recoreded on a weekly record sheet or on a tachograph.

According to GMP, the tachograph showed that the driver they stopped on the M62 had driven in excess of 90 hours over two weeks.

In a post on X, GMP traffic said: “The driver of this HGV was stopped on the M62 near Manchester, Tachograph examination showed three separate two week driving offences in excess of the statutory 90hrs driving. Fined £600. #CVU”
