Manchester United have received an update on Liam Delap’s future amid transfer links with the Reds.

The former Manchester City forward has been in good form for Premier League strugglers Ipswich Town this season and is reportedly on United’s radar. Delap has netted 10 goals for the team currently sitting 18th in the top-flight table.

Recent reports suggest that United are keeping tabs on the English player. With a potential move for Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres possibly off the table, the door may be open for a bid for Delap, especially if Ipswich face relegation.

Reds technical director Jason Wilcox is already familiar with the striker’s prowess, having been part of the City hierarchy that brought him in from Derby County in 2019.

It is reported that City included a £40million buy-back clause in the deal, which is believed to be the benchmark other clubs are using to estimate how much Ipswich might ask for if United decide to chase Delap.

And our colleagues at The Mirror understand that City are unlikely to re-sign him. It is said that Delap wants regular first-team football which he would struggle to get with Erling Haaland well established as first-choice.

Newcastle legend and former England international Alan Shearer has recently heaped praise on the 22-year-old, admitting that Ipswich will struggle to keep hold of him.

“Ipswich fans won’t want to hear it, but it’s inevitable that he’ll be linked with massive football clubs because he’s a really good talent,” he said via Betfair.

“They’re sat on something special are Ipswich. They put their neck on the line and paid the money for him and they’ve done very well with him.

“Delap has stood out this season which unfortunately means that he will attract the attention of the big clubs. It’s going to be very difficult for Ipswich to keep hold of him, particularly because if, as expected, they’re going to get relegated. Having had a taste of the Premier League, he won’t want to go back to the Championship.

“He’ll want to stay in the big league, so it’s going to be very difficult for Ipswich to keep hold of him. If they go down then he won’t want to stay.

“Who would want to go down and play in the Championship, having had a taste of Premier League football – that’s only natural.”
