Liam Delap has been a standout performer for Ipswich this season and has been linked with Manchester United

Liam Delap could reportedly reject a summer transfer to Manchester United.

United are said to have identified Delap as one of their primary transfer targets, with Ruben Amorim keen to sign a top-tier forward. The move towards Delap came after claims that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe informed Amorim that United could not meet the £80million asking price for Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres.

Despite United reportedly making their interest in Delap clear, the 22-year-old is said to be having second thoughts about joining the struggling giants. It is claimed that Delap is looking to join a club competing in Europe, with Chelsea or Arsenal being his preferred choices.

Unless United secure victory in the Europa League, they will not be participating in European competition next season. Delap, eager to secure a spot in England’s 2026 World Cup squad, wants to play for a club operating at the highest level, reports the Daily Star.

The former Manchester City youngster reportedly has a £30m release clause in his contract with Ipswich – and has decided to leave them if they face relegation. Losing out on Delap would be a significant setback for Amorim.

Amorim has expressed concern over his team’s lack of goals this season, recognising that signing a proven striker is a priority. United have reportedly shown interest in Victor Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli.

However, the Nigerian international’s wage demands have deterred United. The 4-1 loss to Newcastle on Sunday underscored the importance of Europa League success for Amorim and United. Winning the tournament is their only ticket to European football next year, offering a significant financial boost and the allure of a Champions League spot to attract players.

United were held to a 2-2 draw in Lyon last week due to two errors by Andre Onana that handed the French side a first-leg draw.

The second leg at Old Trafford on Thursday is a pivotal match for the Reds’ season and transfer strategy going into a huge summer of potential overhaul at M16.
