Quick overview:
The latest Man United news following a 2-2 draw against Lyon – in which Andre Onana was at fault for both goals.
Manchester United centre-back Leny Yoro says he fully supports Andre Onana after addressing the reception he received from the Lyon fan-base on Thursday night – either side of two high-profile mistakes.
Prior to the match, Onana was involved in a war of words with Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic after claiming that United were “much better” than their French opponents. Matic replied by suggesting that Onana was, statistically, one of the “worst goalkeepers” in United’s history – and it didn’t end there.
Instead of letting that incident blow over, Onana decided to retort by insisting he respected Lyon as an opponent, but that “at least he won something while at United.” Predictably, this would come back to bite the Cameroonian as he made not one but two mistakes which led to goals as the Europa League quarter-final first leg was drawn 2-2.
Yoro had scored to give United a foothold in the contest on the stroke of half-time. And speaking to Foot Mercato at full-time, the Frenchman decided to stand by his goalkeeper.
“Of course, of course, it’s part of football, you know, to tease each other like that,” Yoro said when he was pressed on the reception Onana received. “Now, Andre, we’re with him, of course, we support him.
“And we’re going to do everything we can to win a potential match [and reach the semi-finals].”
Looking ahead to the return fixture at Old Trafford, the 19-year-old explained that himself United are still confident, despite Onana’s errors giving Lyon hope.
“We’re not going to say favourites, you know, in football you never know what might happen,” he concluded.
“Of course, we’re Manchester United, so we have to be 100 per cent confident.
“I think that in Old Trafford, we’re going to have the support. We’re going to have the fans with us and we’re going to try to do our best.”
