Here’s what you need to know:
Manchester United defender Leny Yoro scored against Europa League quarter-final opponents Lyon.
Manchester United defender Leny Yoro has expressed his delight after scoring his first goal for the Reds in the 2-2 draw against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday night.
United had the better of the first half but went behind on 25 minutes when Thiago Almada’s free-kick – somehow – eluded everyone, including Andre Onana’s dive, to nestle in the back of the net. With their last throw of the dice in the first half, the Reds restored parity as Yoro diverted a strike into the goal with his head.
Ruben Amorim’s side came out the stronger in the second half as they rightfully took the lead on 88 minutes when Joshua Zirkzee powered a free header into the roof of the net. However, an advantage heading into the second leg was not to be.
In stoppage-time, Onana once more earned himself further scrutiny as he parried a shot straight into the path of Rayan Cherki who chipped in to level the tie. After such a disappointing end to the contest, Yoro decided to wait until Friday afternoon to reflect on his achievement for United.
Sharing pictures from the game at the Groupama Stadium, Yoro captioned the post: “First goal for the badge. All set for a decisive night at Old Trafford.”
Yoro’s assessment of the return leg is rather perfect – considering everything riding on that match for United. The Reds’ only realistic opportunity of gaining European football next season is winning the Europa League so getting past Lyon is critical.
At 2-2, the tie is finely poised but, being the home team, the expectation will be for United to progress to the last-four. If they do win, the Reds will face Rangers or Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals.
Bilbao drew 0-0 at Ibrox in the first leg of their meeting despite the Scottish side going down to ten-men early on. United beat Rangers 2-1 in the group phase earlier this year at Old Trafford.
