Manchester United players have shown their support for Joshua Zirkzee after Ruben Amorim confirmed that the forward will not play again this season.

Zirkzee looked visibly upset when limping off while being helped from the pitch at St James’ Park after being unable to continue because of a hamstring injury. He had to be replaced by Rasmus Hojlund early into the second half on Sunday evening, with the enforced substitution coming six minutes after Newcastle United retook the lead through Harvey Barnes.

Immediately after the match, Amorim acknowledged that he thought Zirkzee would be “out for some games”. Three days later, Amorim offered an update on the player during his press conference on Wednesday.

“Joshua is out for the season,” the United head coach said, “so he’s not going to play any more this season; let’s prepare him for the next one. It’s tough, especially in this moment; he’s improving in all aspects of the game, so it’s hard for any player to stop, but it is football, and he has to be ready now to recover.”

United shared across their social media channels that Zirzkee is out for the rest of this season, wishing Josh a speedy recovery. In response, Zirkzee liked the post, as did three United team-mates Andre Onana, Bruno Fernandes and Ethan Wheatley.

The player has also received plenty of support from the club’s fans. Zirkzee thanked Reds supporters for helping him through his early struggles as a United player in an interview with the club last month.

“Of course, it wasn’t the best period,” he said. “We all know what happened [when sections of the Old Trafford crowd jeered him during the reverse fixture against Newcastle], and for the fans to stand behind me – like they did back then – was maybe even a relief.

“For them to show that they’re not giving up on me. To just show that they’re still behind me.

“As I said before, it just motivates you a lot. It motivates you.”
