Joshua Zirkzee has received support from 10 Manchester United players after his goal in Thursday night’s Europa League clash against Lyon.

The Reds looked to be closing in on a huge victory, in France, after Zirkzee netted with just minutes remaining to put United 2-1 up on the night. It was Zirkzee’s first goal since scoring in the first leg against Real Sociedad in early March.

But a stoppage-time equaliser from Rayan Cherki left Ruben Amorim’s squad frustrated on a night where they played well. United must lick their wounds in time for Sunday’s trip to Newcastle before the crucial second leg against Lyon next Thursday night at Old Trafford.

Zirkzee has since fired a message on social media after his goal at the Groupama Stadium. The Dutch forward posted a pictured on Instagram of him celebrating his goal in a wordless message.

Ayden Heaven, Leny Yoro, Rasmus Hojlund, Manuel Ugarte, Luke Shaw, Andre Onana, Patrick Dorgu, Chido Obi, Diogo Dalot and Ethan Joseph Wheatley – who is on loan at Walsall – have all liked Zirkzee’s post.

Head coach Ruben Amorim has praised the Dutch forward for responding to adversity at United. Zirkzee was heckled and booed by some United supporters after he was substituted in the 33rd minute of their 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle on December 30.

“Yes, he’s doing a great job,” Amorim said on his return to form. “But also a very important thing was the way the fans reacted after that incident.

“Even if Josh is not playing, if you see every time he gets on the pitch or is just warming up our fans sing the Josh song. That’s massive for the boy. So it’s 50-50 – 50 per cent the fans and 50 per cent on the part of Josh.

“What did I do to help him? The same thing. I explained the situation.

“As a former player, I wanted to hear some explanation from the coaches on that.

“I just want to help the team and then work with him. All the work that all the staff are doing with him – and he’s improving – and then put it into play. This is the only way to show confidence in him.”
