Jadon Sancho’s season-long loan at Chelsea is approaching its conclusion and it is yet clear whether he will return to Manchester United or move permanently to Stamford Bridge.

The winger joined the Blues on loan at the end of the summer transfer window after returning to Old Trafford from another loan spell, at his former club Borussia Dortmund. He has scored three goals and assisted another ten for Enzo Maresca’s team to aid their bid for Champions League football.

However, reports in recent weeks have claimed that Chelsea could pay a penalty fee to avoid bringing the 25-year-old to the club on a permanent basis. The long-term future of the Englishman continues to be unclear, so with that in mind, MEN Sport brings you a round-up of Sancho’s situation at Chelsea…

Buy option triggered

When Chelsea brought Sancho to the club at the end of the summer transfer window on loan, an option to make the switch permanent for £25million was included.

The option was an obligation to buy if one of several clauses were met and this month, one of them was. Chelsea, who finished sixth in the Premier League last term, finishing above 15th was one of them and the 2-1 win over Fulham means that will now happen.

Chelsea decision

Sancho has hardly pulled up any trees in London with just three goals and a number of poor performances. And despite his loan move including an obligation to buy for £25m, there is a way the forward returns to Manchester.

It’s understood that the Blues will have to pay United £5m if they decide against signing him permanently. At the start of April, Maresca refused to be drawn into speculation of the move.

When asked if he wanted to sign Sancho permanently, he said: “I’m completely focused about nine games, two months to go, I’m completely focused about that. Then what happens in summer, we’ll see.

“The Jadon situation doesn’t change. In terms of numbers, he could do better, no doubt. It is not just about Jadon but we have more players in the same situation.”

Cunha move

The Manchester Evening News reported earlier this week that United are planning for three attacking departures to find their own transfer business this summer.

Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap are prime targets to improve Ruben Amorim’s attack and the probable £92.5m cost of the pair would be helped by the planned sales of Marcus Rashford, Sancho and Antony – all out on loan.

Sancho’s contract at United expires next year and this summer is the club’s last realistic chance of cashing in.
