Quick overview:
Lyon lost after going 4-2 up in extra-time in the quarter-finals of the Europa League and this is how their players reacted.
Corentin Tolisso said he was “hurt” and Malick Fofana said he was dealing with emotions he’d never felt before following Manchester United’s sensational comeback victory against Lyon.
United’s miserable season was minutes away from getting even worse when Lyon led 4-2 in extra-time, but the players refused to give up and Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty to provide a glimmer of hope.
What happened next was extraordinary. Kobbie Mainoo scored a brilliant goal in the 120th minute to equalise and Harry Maguire scored a minute later to claim a stunning 5-4 victory.
Old Trafford erupted after witnessing one of the great European nights.
The game became the first match in major European football history to see five goals scored during extra-time, and Lyon’s players couldn’t believe they threw away a two-goal cushion.
Speaking to Canal+, Tolisso said: “Frankly, it’s going to be hard to talk about. It’s complicated, we went through a lot of emotions. We messed up our first half. We came back to 2-2.
“Unfortunately, my (red) card hurt us. With the experience I have, I have to be careful. The guys were tremendous. I was definitely super proud. At 4-2, I think we thought it was over, but in football, things happen quickly.
“It hurts. It’s one of my worst matches with the red card and the elimination. We’ll have to hold our heads up, digest everything because there’s a match to win on Sunday.”
Fofana told Canal+: “I think everyone is disappointed. I think we played a very good match. In the end, it wasn’t enough. I think we slacked off a bit and we paid dearly for it.
“The penalty hurt us, the (away) crowd pushed us. In the end, we have to be more demanding of ourselves. It’s the first time I’ve felt emotions like that and I’ll remember it for a long time. We’re going to rest and then focus on Saint-Etienne this weekend.”
Tolisso was shown a second yellow card in the 89th minute meaning Lyon were down to 10 men for extra-time, but the French club still scored twice and thought they’d won the game.
United will face Spanish club Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals of the competition.
