The accident took place on Saturday morning (April 19) in Trilla, Illinois, around 200 miles south of Chicago, according to Illinois State Police.
All of the four occupants of the plane – a single-engine Cessna 180 – were pronounced dead at the scene and an investigation has been launched. Police have said the victims include two men and two women who were from Wisconsin.
The plane reportedly crashed into a set of power lines before bursting into flames, according to CBS News.
Pictures from the scene of the crash show the burning wreckage and debris strewn across a field and nearby road. The roadway is expected to be closed for most of the day, police have said.
Illinois State Police said: “ISP Troop 7 was notified of a small single-engine plane crash at the above location. All four occupants were from Menomonie, Wisconsin, and were pronounced deceased on scene.”
They added: “The aircraft remains in the roadway and the roadway will be shut down until later today. This is an active and ongoing investigation.”
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the fatal crash and said that four people were on board the aircraft which crashed in a field southeast of Coles County Memorial Airport.
Kynnedi Goldstein, who witnessed the crash, told CBS News Chicago: “I was getting ready to turn a show on and all of a sudden I hear this noise. It’s like the whole ‘boom,’ and then our power went out for a second, and then our generator kicked on.
“So then I go out to our sunroom, and I look, and there’s a huge pile of smoke.”
Governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker, said in a post on social media: “We keep those impacted by the plane crash in our thoughts today. Thank you to the first responders who rushed to the scene.”
The crash comes after a small plane crashed into a river in eastern Nebraska on Friday (April 18) where three people died.
