Manchester United legend Gary Neville has admitted that he foresaw the Reds losing to Newcastle on Sunday but he surprisingly does not think that this group of players are not trying hard enough.

United went into the break with some optimism as Sandro Tonali’s opener was cancelled out by Alejandro Garnacho’s strike. However, the game fell to bits in the second half as the Magpies ran riot.

Harvey Barnes’ impressive brace followed by Bruno Guimaraes’ strike ensured the three points were remaining in the north east. After the match a disheartened Neville, who was working for American broadcaster NBC Sports on Sunday, explained why he saw that result coming.

“I said at the beginning of the game, if Newcastle United play well, Manchester United will get beat,” Neville began. “They are not a very good team. Simple as that.

“The biggest worry is that there are teams in the last five, six, seven years at United where you have thought, they are very talented players but they are not really giving it their all. The problem with this group of players is that they are giving it their all.

“I don’t think there’s a lack of effort, they are so below the standard and quality that you need at that football club, all over the pitch. Other than Bruno Fernandes, Amad maybe, I can’t think of any of them who I can hang my hat on.

“It is a really desperate situation because the squad is so poor in quality. They have got young players, they’ve got old players who are nowhere near it.

“Then they have got sort of a group of players who are… it is a worrying situation. The system is a problem, I have asked this question for about two months, who are the natural wing-backs?

“Who are the two players who play in behind the striker? They need a centre-forward who carries the line, who is that player who will go to Manchester United?

“Because there are seven or eight teams at the top of the league who need a striker, so you are not going to Manchester United in front of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea so there is massive issues. Honestly, you don’t know where to build the first step from.

“There is a serious amount of time and good recruitment needed to get that right.” Next up for United is a crucial clash with Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals.

The game is all square at 2-2 so United know a win by any margin will be enough to book their places in the semi-finals.
