Eric Cantona attended the Manchester derby and spoke at events in the build-up to the game at Old Trafford.
Manchester United legend Eric Cantona believes Ruben Amorim is “unhappy” with the players at his disposal.
Amorim arrived from Sporting Lisbon in November and inherited a struggling squad. He changed the team’s formation but most of the players have looked unsuited to his 3-4-3 system.
United’s results have continued to be poor and they suffered a 14th defeat of the Premier League season against Newcastle on Sunday. Newcastle did the double over United for the first time since 1930/31 and the unwanted records have stacked up again during a miserable campaign.
Speaking in January, an honest Amorim said his team “maybe” the worst side in the club’s history, and they are now set to record United’s lowest-ever points total in the Premier League.
Amorim has been forced to operate with players who are unsuited to his system and United decided to strengthen his squad with only two young players in the January window.
Cantona believes Amorim must be backed in the summer window because he is working with players he is “unhappy” with, which means it would be fairer to judge him next season.
“We have to wait,” said Cantona. “He did great things at Lisbon and came in during the middle of the season, so he didn’t choose a player, I know he’s unhappy about the players.
“So we have to wait until this summer. It will be more fair to judge him next season because he has to work with the players he didn’t choose.”
Cantona spoke at an event, staged by his travel company, ahead of the Manchester derby.
He was asked to recall his favourite United goal and responded: “The goal I scored in the FA Cup final against Liverpool because we won the double, with a new generation of players.
“A golden generation of players and it was their first season. This is the identity of United for me, rich enough to buy the best players in the world, but also they work hard in the time of Sir Alex Ferguson and young players, so for me it was something that I achieved for the project of Ferguson.”

“To win the double with the first season of five or six young players – who were 18 and 19 years old. This is United for me, this is United.”
