Quick overview:
Nintendo has hidden two more secret buttons on its latest console that it doesn’t seem to be shouting about.
When the Nintendo Switch 2 was first announced in January of this year, we all quickly spotted a secret button on the right Joy-Con. This was later revealed to be a ‘C’ button that brings up GameChat functionality for online play, but it turns out that Nintendo has hidden a couple more buttons on the console that it doesn’t seem to be shouting about.
The buttons in question can be found on the Joy-Con controller grip that’s included as standard with all Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. Around the back, you’ll find two paddle buttons, the same ones found on the back of the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro controller.
While we knew that the Pro controller would be getting the additional grip button functionality, it’s surprising to see Nintendo include them on the basic controller attachment too. I first noticed these when picking up the pad to play Mario Kart World at the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Experience Event in London, as it doesn’t seem Nintendo has spoken about the feature much since the console’s reveal.
As for what the two buttons do, that’s entirely up to you. They weren’t bound to anything while I was playing Mario Kart, but you’ll be able to bind them to any other button you like on the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.
For example, if you bind them to act as the left and right bumpers in Mario Kart World, you could easily drift and use items without ever shifting the position of your hands. It’s a feature that’s normally reserved for Pro controllers with PlayStation and Xbox charging more for premium versions of their own controllers with paddle buttons.
Of course, you don’t have to use the back buttons if you don’t want to – and I’d actually advise that you turn them off in the system settings if you’re not going to. At least in the short time I had with the controller, I found that I ended up regularly pressing the buttons when I didn’t mean to.
I’m sure that gripping the new Joy-Con controller in a way that doesn’t press the buttons accidentally will come with experience. However, it might prove a frustrating experience if you’re not used to having buttons on the back of your controller.
This is unlikely to be what swings gamers towards buying a Nintendo Switch 2 if they weren’t going to already, but it may well hold off some folks from buying a Pro controller altogether. If the paddle buttons aren’t unique to the £74.99 accessory, then the only real benefits you’re getting are a slightly more ergonomic grip.
That said, the Pro controller can be used completely independently of the Joy-Cons, adding a third controller into your line-up if you wanted to play Mario Kart with two other mates in local co-op. Several retailers have the controller available to pre-order with ShopTo seeming to have the best price at £74.85.
