Boxing promoter Bob Arum is of the opinion that Tyson Fury will not return to the sport after the 36-year-old announced his shock retirement earlier this year.

A matter of weeks after being handed the second defeat of his career, having failed to beat Oleksandr Usyk in their rematch in December, Fury made the shock announcement in January that he intended to step away from boxing. In a video uploaded to his Instagram account at the time, he said: “Hi everybody. I’m gonna make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing.

“It’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single minute of it, and I’m gonna end with this: ‘Dick Turpin wore a mask’.” Richard ‘Dick’ Turpin was a highwayman during the 18th century who infamously wore a mask to conceal his identity.”

The Manchester-born boxer has retired more than once during his career, only to later reverse those decisions and return to the ring. However, Arum insists this time is different and he doesn’t expect Fury to come back.

“If I was a betting man I would say he will never fight again,” Arum told the 5 Live Boxing podcast with Steve Bunce. “Marvin Hagler had an expression – ‘a rich guy who goes to bed wearing silk pyjamas doesn’t get up in the morning to do road work’.

“Tyson, really, I don’t think wants to get up in the morning and do road work and go through the experience of having to train when economically he doesn’t have to do it any more.”

‘The Gypsy King’ retired with an impressive professional record of 34 wins from 37 fights, and 24 of those came by way of knockout. His only defeats were the two to Usyk last year, with the Ukrainian ending a 15-year unbeaten streak when they met for their first fight in May 2024.
