Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has admitted he does not like the idea that winning the Europa League would rescue what has been a poor season for the Reds.

United find themselves languishing in the bottom half of the table and got off to their worst ever start to a Premier League season under Erik ten Hag. Matters have not improved significantly under Ruben Amorim but the Europa League has been the one bright spark.

In the last round, United managed to dispatch Real Sociedad with ease and on Thursday night they travel to Lyon for the first leg of their quarter-final tie. The Reds are considered one of the favourites to win Europe’s secondary prize and they will need the goals of Hojlund to make that happen.

The Dane has scored the majority of his eight goals in the Europa League but has insisted that success in Bilbao at the end of the campaign would not gloss over what has been a poor season. “Yeah, I guess so in some ways, but then again, I don’t like the, the word ‘rescue,'” Hojlund responded when asked by ESPN about whether the Europa League could save United.

“It’s more of a learning curve and trying to have a good fundamental to build on for next season. I guess we’re still quite early in the phase, aren’t we?

“Then again, we are going in the right direction, I think. We’re starting to understand each other, but like the coach is saying… every time he goes in the media he says we have so much to improve and everybody needs to do better and we need to develop all of us, so that’s the target.”

Amorim is expected to oversee a big overhaul of the United squad in the summer transfer window. A new striker is deemed essential for the Reds as they look to add more firepower to their attack.

Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres are among the strikers who have been linked with the Reds.
