Manchester United earned a major financial boost courtesy of their victory over Lyon in the Europa League.

United snatched a dramatic 5-4 win after extra-time against the Ligue 1 club in their quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford on Thursday night. Ruben Amorim’s side had been held to a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes and were trailing 4-2 going into the final moments of the game.

Goals from Manuel Ugarte, Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire sealed an aggregate win for United, and their passage into the semi-final of the Europa League. United will now meet Athletic Bilbao in the last-four of the competition, with a place in the final up for grabs.

Due to them securing a spot in the semi-final, United banked more millions in prize money with the potential for more to come. Beating Real Sociedad in the last-16 meant that United’s earnings for the tournament had gone up to €7.55million (£6.47million).

United’s performances across the league phase of the Europa League saw them earn €2.7million (£2.3million). This came with their five wins worth €450,000 (£385,800) each and the three draws worth €150,000 (£128,600) apiece.

Finishing in the top-eight of the league phase then saw United earn an additional €600,000 (£514,400). This was followed by €1.75million (£1.5million) for reaching the last-16 – and then €2.5million (£2.14million) for qualifying for the quarter-final.

Beating Lyon in the quarter-final has now seen United earn an additional €4.2million (£3.6million) in prize money from the Europa League. This takes the total earned from the campaign so far up to £10million with the potential for more to come in the weeks ahead.

If United were to beat Bilbao over two legs, it would see them earn a further €7million (£6million) in prize money for reaching the final. This total could then increase by a further €6million (5.14million) if they were to win the trophy and be crowned champions. This would see United’s total prize money for the tournament reach a total of €24.75million (£21.2million).
