Harry Maguire headed in a dramatic winner for Man United to help them beat Lyon 5-4 at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
Manchester United hero Harry Maguire praised his teammates’ fighting spirit after they produced a sensational comeback to beat Lyon 5-4 in the Europa League on Thursday night.
United progressed to the semi-finals of the competition in extraordinary fashion at Old Trafford, coming from 4-2 down in extra-time to seal a 5-4 win on the night and a 7-6 aggregate triumph.
Maguire headed in a 121st-minute winner for the Reds after Kobbie Mainoo had levelled the game and the tie just a minute earlier. United had trailed 4-2 on the night and 6-4 on aggregate with 113 minutes gone.
The Reds found themselves 2-0 up at half-time and were seemingly coasting towards a semi-final clash with Athletic Bilbao. However, Lyon fought back to square the game and send the contest to extra-time, despite having Corentin Tolisso, who scored their first goal, sent off.
Lyon then seized control, scoring twice to flip the game and the tie on its head, taking a 4-2 lead on the night and a 6-4 lead on aggregate.
However, United refused to throw the towel in, fighting back to complete one of the most astonishing comebacks Old Trafford has ever seen.
“Obviously, it was an incredible game,” Maguire told TNT Sports. “We made really hard work of it, I must say.
“At half-time we were 2-0 up and had full control. I think even in the second half I felt like we had chances to score that third.
“Then they scored out of nowhere, a bit of a pinball goal, and it put us on the back foot and they managed to get that equaliser.
“To go 4-2 down in extra-time against ten men is nowhere near good enough. We opened ourselves up too much and they are a good team with some good forwards.
“They play great football, but we dug in and showed great spirit. That is what this stadium does. To come back like that, it was an incredible performance from everyone in the final minutes.”
Alexandre Lacazette netted Lyon’s fourth goal of the night in the second half of extra-time, converting a penalty, and Maguire described that moment as a “sucker punch”.
He added: “I felt like the fourth goal for them was a real sucker punch. When we went 3-2 down, I felt we were going to get chances to come back into it.
“But as soon as we got the fourth, I felt like there was going to be another chance, and obviously it fell to myself and thankfully I put it in the back of the net. It was an amazing feeling.”
