The Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith has opened up about how she cherishes the time she has as she admitted she doesn’t believe she has “much longer” left.

Dame Prue Leith, 85, opened up about her feelings regarding the twilight years of her life, expressing a desire to cherish every moment with her husband, John Playfair, 71, Walesonline reports.

Chatting with Holly Rubenstein on The Travel Diaries podcast, Dame Prue confessed: “I haven’t got much longer, I’m 85, I want to spend as much time as I can with him.”

In light of this, the TV personality explained how she now relies on her husband’s support when travelling globally for her career.

She said: “And so, if we are filming abroad, or like next week, we’re going to New York, because I’ve got to publicise the American baking show, then I’m now old enough for my agent to say ‘I’m sorry, but she has to ring her husband, because she’s 85, she needs someone to carry the bags’ she doesn’t quite say ‘she needs a carer’ but it’s pretty close.”

Elsewhere in the podcast, Dame Prue spoke warmly of her husband, praising his humble nature and lack of ego. She shared with listeners: “One of the wonderful things about him is that he is totally without ego, he doesn’t feel threatened by the fact that I have a higher profile than he does, when I introduce him (to people) he always just says ‘I’m the handbag carrier, I’m her chauffeur’.”

Dame Prue tied the knot with John in 2016, following the passing of her first husband, Rayne Kruger, who died at the age of 80 in 2002. The couple had two children together – Li-Da Kruger, who was adopted from Cambodia, and Danny Kruger.

In a separate note on maintaining her vibrant appearance at 85, Dame Prue revealed: “I wish I could say it is from some wonderful thing I do, but if I look good or at least younger than I am, then it’s got to be at least because I sleep well and I eat well, and I am happy, when you’re unhappy, you don’t eat well.”

Dame Prue’s illustrious career in the culinary world began at the age of 20 when she enrolled at the Cordon Bleu Cookery School. After honing her skills there, she made her first significant foray into the food industry by opening her own restaurant, Leith’s, in Notting Hill, London, at the age of 29.

Her journey has seen her become a beloved figure on television and a successful author of numerous cookery books. In 2017, she took on one of her most prominent roles as a judge on the Great British Bake Off, stepping into the shoes of Dame Mary Berry.

While Dame Prue continues her role on GBBO, she has recently decided to step back from the celebrity version of the show, with her close friend Caroline Waldergrave filling in for her.

Dame Prue revealed why she came to the decision, stating: “These things are filmed back-to-back all the way through summer from April to August so you don’t get any time off. I’m getting quite old and there’s places I want to see. So I’m not doing this year’s.”
