Gary Neville has called on Manchester United’s hierarchy to secure the signatures of at least five new players in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Despite expectations for a squad overhaul at this season’s end, Ruben Amorim had previously set a cautious tone regarding the profile of potential recruits. The Red Devils opened their coffers last summer in an ambitious restructuring primarily led by Erik ten Hag, rather than the present manager, and as such, another batch of signings is anticipated.

January saw the arrival of Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven, yet pressing concerns remain unresolved, particularly affecting strategic positions across the field. In light of Sunday’s goalless stalemate with Manchester City, Neville pinpointed critical weaknesses within Amorim’s team. The ex-defender took to Sky Sports to advocate for an entirely revamped front line at United.

Reflecting on Amorim’s tactical choices in the derby, Neville asserted (via the Express): “From a United perspective, I get why he’s gone back into a low block. But that’s what we’ve seen from Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik Ten Hag.

“They’ve all come in with the intention of playing high-press, high-energy football, but all end up going back to a low block in big games. I do understand why Ruben Amorim’s done that today, with the players he’s got, because he hasn’t got the players to adapt.

“They need five new players straight away before you even think about the rest of it. The three up front are not good enough and the two wing-backs, they’re not good enough.

“They need five players. They need to serve him with five players who are good enough in this system to be able to play his system the way he wants.”

Neville’s stark assessment for an overhaul at wing-back may come as a surprise to some, particularly with the recent £30million acquisition of Dorgu from Lecce.

Despite this, the team is also expected to pursue a high-profile forward, as both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have yet to impress this term.

Victor Osimhen has been mentioned as a potential target for Amorim’s outfit, too, although it remains to be seen if United possess the financial strength to secure the Nigerian’s services at present.
