Easter weekend is starting on a wet note as the Met Office has issued a yellow rain warning affecting three areas of the UK from today, Friday, April 18.

The warnings come into effect at 2pm today, April 18, and remain in place until 3pm tomorrow, April 19. Areas affected by the weather warning includes Northern Ireland, Wales and South West England.

The weather warning reads: “A prolonged spell of rain, some of it heavy, will likely cause difficult driving conditions and some disruption to travel.”

Severe weather warnings get issued by the Met Office when there could be disruption caused by the conditions and can be issued for a variety of phenomenon including rain, snow, ice, hail and wind, among others. There are varying severities of weather warnings from yellow, mild risk, amber, moderate risk, and red, severe or danger to life risk.

This period of wet weather follows a few weeks of glorious sunshine and clear skies caused by a long-lasting area of high pressure over the UK, which is now replaced by low pressure – hence the wet, cloudy and colder conditions.

According to the Met Office’s UK-wide forecast, it is likely to get windier into the evening tonight, April 18. They wrote: “Windy with spells of rain, heavy at times, in the south and west will continue overnight. Mostly dry with variable amounts of cloud elsewhere. Milder than the previous night.”

Going into the weekend, the UK-wide forecast for Saturday reads: “Rain gradually easing in the west through Saturday, though still rather cloudy. Drier in the east with some bright spells. A little cooler than Friday in the east.”

And looking further ahead at the period from Sunday until Tuesday, the Met Office has warned of “changeable” conditions. The UK weather agency wrote: “Remaining changeable towards the end of the Easter weekend.

“Further spells of rain likely, especially across western areas, although some sunnier intervals also expected. Temperatures likely to remain near average.”
