More and more companies are announcing store closures
Just four months into 2025, dozens of organisations have announced high street store closures – with more than 200 UK stores closing their shutters for the last time.
Reduced consumer spending and the elevated cost of rent and bills for businesses has meant that high street retailers are under more and more pressure to keep their stores viable as they are faced with more competition from online stores.
Fashion retailers are being hit hardest, with New Look, Select Fashion, Monki and Quiz Clothing all shutting several stores. More than half the closures so far in 2025 have been operated by fashion retailers.
Other major retailers closing down stores include WHSmith and Homebase, and over 60 bank branches have shut down so far this year – many of them occupying prime high street locations in towns and cities, part of the long-running trend towards online banking.
Lloyds, Halifax, Barclays and Bank of Scotland have closed branches since the start of the year and just this week Santander has announced the closure of a further 95 branches which will come into effect in the coming months.
On top of that, supermarket giant Morrisons has this week announced it is closing 17 convenience stores around the country, with the date of the closures yet to be confirmed.
