More than a dozen schedules flights to and from Manchester Airport have been cancelled.

Airlines are being affected by a strike in Greece, which has grounded flights today (April 9).

The issue is affecting both arrivals and departures at Manchester, with six flights in each direction affected by the strike.

In Greece, ferries have also been docked and public transport is running part-time as unions push for an end to austerity measures imposed on Greece by international creditors a decade ago, as the cost of living soars in the country.

A 24-hour strike was called by the two main umbrella unions covering the public and private sectors, calling for increased salaries and the return of collective bargaining rights which were scrapped during Greece’s financial crisis.

Commercial flights to and from Greece, and between domestic destinations, have been cancelled from 12am this morning until midnight tonight.

“The high cost of living is eating away at workers’ incomes, without any care from the government,” said the General Confederation of Workers of Greece.
