Latest Manchester United news as Athletic Bilbao provide an injury update on Nico Williams ahead of the Europa League semi-final against United
Athletic Bilbao manager Ernesto Valverde has provided an update on Nico Williams’ fitness ahead of their Europa League clash against Manchester United.
Ruben Amorim’s side will face Bilbao in the semi-final of the Europa League, with the first leg taking place in Spain next week.
United claimed a 7-6 aggregate victory over Lyon to secure a spot in the last-four, while Bilbao beat Rangers over two legs in their quarter-final tie.
Williams scored in Bilbao’s 2-0 win over Rangers in the second leg last Thursday, but was not part of the squad for the defeat to Real Madrid in La Liga on Sunday night.
Bilbao confirmed before the trip to the Spanish capital that Williams was sidelined with a groin injury and would not be available for the game.
Valverde was asked about Williams’s injury after his side’s defeat to Madrid on Sunday night but would not confirm if the issue will keep the Spain international on the sidelines for the foreseeable.
“It’s something he’s been carrying for a short time and it didn’t come on suddenly,” Valverde told Marca when he was asked about Williams’s injury.
“We hope to recover for these upcoming matches. It’s true that the season is long and we have to get to the end.
“We’re in the final stretch and it shows because we always have to be at 100%, but physically, my team is a guarantee.”
United are scheduled to face Bilbao in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday, May 1, at the San Mames Stadium.
Amorim and Co. will then return to Old Trafford a week later for the reverse fixture, having scored nine goals across their two home knockout fixtures in the competition so far.
