The UK Foreign Office has issued a new warning for British holidaymakers planning to travel to Spain. The warning comes following heavy rainfall and flooding in Lanzarote, which have swamped homes and cars.

On Saturday, a state of emergency was declared by local officials due to the flooding.

Cars were left abandoned in the streets as heavy downpours turned roads into deep and dangerous flowing rivers. Some locals have complained of a horrific sewage smell in the area as flooding affected the drainage system.

In response, the UK Foreign Office issued a travel warning earlier today (April 13). The areas affected by the flooding include Costa Teguise, San Bartolomé, and Arrecife.

The UK Foreign Office said services across the island have been affected with some hotels currently without power and some roads affected by mud.

The department advise anyone in Lanzarote, or travelling to Lanzarote, to follow the advice of the local authorities and monitor local weather updates.

In an update to its travel advice page on gov.uk, the Foreign Office said: “Heavy rainfall and flooding in Lanzarote occurred earlier today (13 April 2025) with Costa Teguise, San Bartolomé, and Arrecife particularly affected. Services across the island are affected. Some hotels are currently without power. Some roads are currently affected by mud. If you are in Lanzarote or travelling to Lanzarote, follow the advice of the local authorities and monitor local weather updates.”
