British holidaymakers heading to Greece this week could face travel disruption including cancelled flights as air traffic controllers threaten to walk out.

The industrial action by Greek air traffic controllers is planned for Wednesday. Workers could walk out for 24 hours in a dispute over bonuses.

If it goes ahead the only flights that are allowed to land will be medical, search and rescue, humanitarian aid, military and emergency services, according to Travel Weekly.

The strike action comes as thousands of Brits jet off on holiday ahead of the Easter weekend, with many UK schools already off this week.

Public sector union Adedy has called the strike, despite Greek courts ruling that is is unlawful for controllers to strike.

The union is demanding reinstatement of two-month annual bonuses for public workers, which were half a month at Easter, half a month in summer and a full month at Christmas. These were abolished during previous austerity measures in Greece.

Greek airlines AegeanAirlines and Olympic Air are offering passengers the flexibility to change their tickets, without a reissue fee, or cancel their booking with the option to receive a credit voucher.

In a statement on its website, the Aegean group said that it was waiting on the decision of the courts before altering its flight schedules.

Greek air traffic controllers previously joined a nationwide strike in February, held to mark the second anniversary of the Tempe train crash, which saw 57 people killed when a freight train and a passenger train collided in February 2023.
