Manchester United trained this morning ahead of facing Lyon in the Europa League and here are some of the things we spotted at Carrington.

United trained on Wednesday morning

Manchester United trained at a sun-kissed Carrington this morning ahead of facing Lyon.

United are set to play the French side in the Europa League quarter-final first leg on Thursday night, and they will begin the 620-mile journey to France from Manchester Airport later this afternoon.

Ruben Amorim’s side drew 0-0 with Manchester City at Old Trafford last weekend. The game was a dull contest, but Amorim would have felt United did enough to claim the win.

Here are some of the things we spotted at Carrington ahead of the trip to Lyon…

Mainoo return?

Amorim said last week Kobbie Mainoo would “maybe” return to the squad after injury, and it was great to see the youngster training with the main group at Carrington on Wednesday morning.

Whether Mainoo is involved against Lyon remains to be seen, but his recovery from a muscle injury is a huge boost at the business end of the campaign.

The 19-year-old’s season has been interrupted by a few minor injuries and Mainoo will be motivated to remind everyone of his talent when he gets the opportunity to start in the coming weeks.

Onana wrestling Garnacho

Spring has arrived in Manchester and conditions were perfect for training.

Alejandro Garnacho and Andre Onana looked to be playing a different sport at one point, with Onana picking Garnacho up and slowly putting him on the floor. It was a WWE-esque wrestling move and Garnacho couldn’t stop laughing as he picked himself up.

It’s a cliché to say spirits were high in training, but the players were in a notably upbeat mood.

Manuel Ugarte wasn’t messing around, mind. “Don’t stop, don’t have mercy!” he shouted during a rondo as Garnacho and Godwill Kukonki desperately tried to win it back in the middle.

Amorim watches from a distance

Amorim prefers to stand away from his players as they complete rondos before the main work begins. He was spotted keeping an eye on the group as they started the session.

The likes of Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, Andreas Georgson and Darren Fletcher oversaw the rondos while Amorim stood roughly 200 yards away with his hands buried into his pockets.

Five youngsters involved

Kukonki, Jack Moorhouse, Harry Amass, Jaydan Kamason and Elyh Harrison were part of the session, but there was no Chido Obi, who is ineligible to play in Europe because he wasn’t registered.

Obi was still involved in the training session before facing Real Sociedad in San Sebastian and his absence suggests he will be prepared to play for the Under-21s against Reading on Friday.

Moorhouse, Amass and Kamason have made tremendous progress this term. Amass was given his senior bow before the international break, and Moorhouse and Kamason could come next.

Kukonki made the bench for the Manchester derby and he is another youngster with a bright future.

Kukonki took part in the session.

Amass looked comfortable

It must be intimidating to participate in first-team training for the first time, but the youngsters who took part on Wednesday have had the chance to train with the seniors on plenty of occasions.

Amass has been in and around the senior squad for over a year now and he is beginning to look comfortable with the first-team. That was perhaps demonstrated by Amass attempting to chip the ball over Onana in the rondo, which saw Bruno Fernandes laugh at his audacious effort and shout: “Harrrry.”

The academy graduates who are called up clearly aren’t afraid to express themselves.
