These are five national headlines from across the UK and beyond today

It’s been a busy news day in the UK and around the world today.

The fallout from US President Donald Trump’s blistering round of tariffs continues, with the UK beginning to react to the 10 percent tariffs imposed by the US president.

Meanwhile in Liverpool the Grand National has seen Nick Rockett, well, rocketing to victory with odds of 33/1.

In Lincolnshire, a caravan fire at a holiday park has claimed the lives of two people. A police investigation has been launched into the blaze.

Labour MP Dan Norris has been arrested on suspicion of rape and child sex offences. Police raided the MP’s constituency home on Friday.

Finally, new footage has emerged contradicting official Israeli accounts about a group of paramedics who were killed in Gaza. The footage is reportedly shot by one of the deceased paramedics.

Here is our quick summary of these five national stories.

Trump Tariffs

Jaguar Land Rover has announced it will be pausing shipments to the United States following the announcement of a series of tariffs on goods being imported into the US.

The UK has had a tariff of 10 percent imposed. While this is lower than many other countries, the UK may still face knock effects as the tariffs begin to bite our trading partners.

However, imported cars have been particularly badly hit, with a 25 percent tariff imposed on cars being imported into the US as part of what Trump has called “liberation day”.

A spokesperson for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) said: “The USA is an important market for JLR’s luxury brands.

“As we work to address the new trading terms with our business partners, we are taking some short-term actions including a shipment pause in April, as we develop our mid to longer-term plans.”

This week China has responded to Trump’s tariffs with tariffs of their own, imposing a 34 percent tariff on US goods.

The market has reacted with panic and oil prices have slumped to a three year low.

Despite the chaos, Trump has predictably doubled down on the tariffs, urging the US to “Hang tough, it won’t be easy, but the end result will be historic.”

Grand National

Nick Rockett swept to victory in the Grand National, beating last year’s favourite I Am Maximus at Aintree.

The steeplechase saw 34 runners jostling for victory over the gruelling four miles and 2 and a half furlong course.

Nick Rockett’s trainer Will Mullins said after the race: “It was some result. It is lovely to be able to give your son a ride in the National, but to be able to win it is just unbelievable.”

Two horses fell in the race, and it’s not known at present whether they suffered any fatal injuries.

In a statement posted at 6pm, the British Horseracing Authority said: “Both horses received immediate and extensive treatment by the vets, also calling on the first class facilities and various teams on site.

“This treatment and assessment will continue into the evening.”

The BBC has reported that the deceased are a 10-year-old girl and a 48-year-old man. Police have confirmed that their next of kin have been informed.

The force said in a statement on Saturday afternoon: “We are very sad to confirm that two people have died following a caravan fire at Goldenbeach Holiday Park, Roman Bank, Ingoldmells.

“We were called at 3.53 am today (5 April) to a report of a caravan fire at the holiday park where two people have tragically lost their lives. Their next of kin have been informed and will be supported by specially trained officers.

Labour MP Dan Norris has been arrested on suspicion of rape and child sex offences.

Police raided the constituency home of the MP for North East Somerset and Hanham on Friday.

Since his arrest Labour has confirmed that Mr Norris has been suspended from the party

A Labour Party spokesperson said: “Dan Norris MP was immediately suspended by the Labour Party upon being informed of his arrest. We cannot comment further while the police investigation is ongoing.”

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: ‘In December 2024, we received a referral from another police force relating to alleged non-recent child sex offences having been committed against a girl.

“Most of the offences are alleged to have occurred in the 2000s, but we’re also investigating an alleged offence of rape from the 2020s.

“An investigation, led by officers within Operation Bluestone, our dedicated rape and serious sexual assault investigation team, remains ongoing and at an early stage.”

Gaza paramedics

Footage from Gaza contradicting the Israeli armed forces' narrative after the discovery of the bodies of 15 aid workers in a "mass grave"
The footage shows the emergency lights on, contradicting the Israeli narrative

New images have emerged following the discovery of the bodies of 15 aid workers in a “mass grave” in Gaza.

The paramedics were killed in Gaza last month, with the Israeli military claiming that an investigation found that the vehicles did not have any headlights or emergency signals, and were targeted because they looked “suspicious”.

However video footage obtained by Palestine Red Crescent Society shows the convoy of ambulances and fire fighting vehicles driving along with clear signage and their emergency lights flashing, contradicting the narrative given by the Israeli military.

The Israel Defence Force has said that it is conducting a “thorough examination” following the release of the footage, which has been verified by Sky News.

In the clip, the paramedic who is filming can be heard reciting in Arabic a declaration of faith which is used before someone dies.

He repeats: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of God.”

Finally, he can be heard to say: “Forgive me, mother, this is the path I chose mother, to help people, forgive me, mother, I swear I chose this path only to help people.”
