Former AS Monaco and Croatia international Nikola Pokrivac has died at the age of 39.

The defensive midfielder has died, reportedly as a result of injuries sustained in a four-car crash in the Croatian city of Karlovac on Friday. The collision is also thought to have claimed the life of one other person.

It’s understood that Pokrivac was in a vehicle with three of his NK Vojnic teammates at the time of the crash. They were all left injured with two believed to be in a critical condition.

The Croatian Football Federation – known as HNS – said in a statement: “It’s impossible to find words of comfort in such a shocking and unimaginably sad moment when we have lost a young life.”

HNS President Marijan Kustic added: “It’s impossible to find words of comfort in such a shocking and unimaginably sad moment when we have lost a young life.”

He continued: “I can only express my deepest condolences to Nikola’s family, and loved ones, for this irreplaceable loss, and the HNS and the Croatian football family will stand by them in these most difficult moments.
