Quick overview:
Adrian Bayford, 54, won the jackpot in 2012 with his then-wife Gillian
A EuroMillions winner who pocketed an eye-watering £148million has reportedly traded in his sprawling mansion to live with his 80 year old mother.
Adrian Bayford, a former postal worker aged 54, won the colossal prize with his ex-wife Gillian back in 2012 and is now set to abandon the plush seven-bedroom countryside abode he shared with his current fiancée Tracey Biles.
The pair will swap the palatial residence for a more humble four-bedroom house Bayford bought for his parents.
A friend revealed to The Sun: “He thinks he can just downsize and have a simple life and go back to how things used to be before he was mega rich. The house he is leaving is one he bought with his ex Gillian and where he split from his other fiancées so it’s full of bad memories for him.
“He loves Tracey. He loves his mum so it makes sense for them to all move in together.”
Last Christmas saw Bayford popping the question to Tracey, an ambulance worker. However, their union came after his separation from Gillian, which occurred merely 15 months following their windfall.
Bayford had been attempting to sell off his lavish £12.3m estate near Cambridge, which boasted a vineyard, hosted Airbnb guests and served as the venue for music festivals, reports the Mirror.
Notably, the Cambridge Rock Festival took place over four days, with tickets escalating in price from £129 to increments of £139, £149 and £159. Attracting approximately 60 rock bands, the festival continued until 11pm each night.
Yet, come 2023, Bayford found himself cancelling the event as local authorities declined to grant the necessary licence.
In 2014, he acquired a 17th-century farmhouse and had plans approved to convert the building into a holiday rental. Bayford then disclosed aspirations to construct a theme park across 20 acres within his sprawling, Grade II-listed Georgian property, which in total covers 198 acres.
To facilitate the development of a 90-space car park, a maze, and a train ride, the demolition of six farm structures would be necessitated.
Bayford outlined in the planning documents his ambition to “seeking to create a highly regarded and well-known leisure destination which provides a fun, exciting and educational day out.”
Despite his intentions, the local council dismissed the proposal, reasoning that it would impute an overly “urban” presence in a rural setting.
BNE Urban Design critiqued the plan stating: “The proposal lacks integration into what remains a site of rural character. Long views towards the development is of particular importance as well as the total composition needing to retain a high percentage of softness in the landscape between the various built-form elements,” presenting their case.
“Through car dependency and increased footfall associated with new retail uses the character shifts substantially away from a rural character.”
There was also concern raised by an Environmental Health officer who cautioned that the suggested amusement park could potentially disrupt the tranquility of those dwelling “close proximity” to the estate.
The officer stated: “Whilst detailed design information with regards to the layout and composition of the proposed development is not available at this stage, particular consideration needs to be given towards the prevention of nuisance that may be caused by commercial premises/uses affecting residential properties in close proximity.”
