The latest batch of EastEnders spoilers have revealed a beloved character ‘intends to end his own life’, in what are set to be heartbreaking scenes.

It’s been a busy period on the BBC soap. This week, fans will see favourite Natalie Cassidy’s final scenes as Sonia Fowler air.

Despite one of the show’s veteran character’s leaving, EastEnders is showing no signs of slowing down in its 40th anniversary year.

One character who has won the hearts of viewers in recent months is Phil Mitchell’s best friend Nigel Bates, with Paul Bradley’s character returning last year for the first time since initially leaving in 1998.

Sadly, Nigel revealed to Phil that he was diagnosed by doctors with early-onset dementia, with his memory struggles getting worse in recent weeks.

In scenes that will air on Monday, April 21, Nigel feels suffocated by Phil’s overprotectiveness, but after a request from Yolande Truman to suit up as the Easter bunny, Nigel spies an opportunity to prove himself to Phil.

All is going well until Nigel and Harvey Monroe argue after he confuses Hope Fowler for Clare Bates. After the altercation, Jean Slater, Harvey and Ian Beale question Phil on Nigel’s wellbeing and he finally reveals all about his dementia diagnosis.

Despite Nigel helping Phil after he attempted to take his own life in February, Phil discovers that he intends to end his own life if his memory continues to deteriorate.

Elsewhere, Teddy Mitchell attempts to take a clandestine call from his son Junior Knight about their project, but when Nicola Mitchell overhears the conversation, Teddy is forced to reveal all.

Despite Nicola’s pleas, Teddy refuses to pull out of the business deal, and later recruits Ross Marshall to join the build. When Nicola arrives to offer Teddy support, she is shocked to hear the location of the site is the same place where her son Harry’s girlfriend Shireen Bashar’s body is buried.

Over at No.45, Priya Nandra-Hart encourages Avani Nandra-Hart to spend time with her friends, but it is clear they are avoiding her when Avani’s texts go unanswered. Later at McKlunky’s, Priya persuades Avani to have lunch with Barney Mitchell, where the pair later make amends. Elsewhere, Zack Hudson is deflated when his son Barney refuses his offer to help with Tommy Moon and Joel Marshall.

On Tuesday, April 22, Nigel attempts to explain his reasoning to Phil, who refuses to listen and leaves. Jean arrives to speak to Nigel, and the pair have a heart-to-heart about his dementia, but Nigel keeps quiet about Phil’s discovery.

Seeking solace with Linda Carter, Phil is encouraged to support his friend through his health battle. Sadly, he later finds Nigel’s goodbye letter, who makes to leave Walford.

Nicola has a busy evening when Teddy informs her that construction will begin at the site this week. Nicola summons her henchman Benji to Harry’s Barn. Out of options, Nicola tells Ravi Gulati she has a job for him.

Phil begins to search for Nigel on Wednesday, April 23, but his fears are raised when Yolande and Jean confirm they haven’t seen him. Joining Phil in his search, Linda tells him that he and Nigel need to make amends before he reluctantly agrees to return home.

Nigel later breaks down as he insists he wants to end his life before the dementia takes hold. Phil attempts to dissuade Nigel, but to no avail. Later, in the café, Yolande gives Phil an idea and he comes up with a big plan.

The final episode of the week on Thursday, April 24, will see Teddy, Harry and Barney pull out all the stops for Nicola’s birthday, but it’s clear she’s distracted by her schemes.

Summing Ravi to Walford East, Nicola offers him £10k for a job. At the Arches, Nicola lies to Harry and manages to secure a customer’s van for the mysterious job.

Nigel’s week looks likely to end on a low note, when he becomes overwhelmed by Phil’s overzealous and caring approach. Phil later tells Kathy Beale that Nigel is no longer capable of working at the café.
