EastEnders fans are predicting who set Martin Fowler’s stall on fire as they ruled out what they called the ‘obvious’ answer.

It’s been an emotional week to date on the BBC soap, with the funeral of the first baby born on the show held on Monday (April 7).

Played by James Bye since 2014, Martin died after having a steel beam crush him moments after confessing his love to Stacey Slater following an explosion in the Queen Vic in February.

Prior to James joining the show, Martin was played by Jon Peyton-Price in EastEnders debut year of 1985, before James Alexandrou portrayed his journey into adulthood over the next 11 years.

The emotional farewell saw the Walford residents gather at Bridge street to see Martin’s funeral procession drive through where he worked as a fruit and vegetable salesman.

At the funeral service, Martin’s godmother Kathy Beale delivered a heartbreaking speech where she said he died too soon.

In scenes that aired on Tuesday (April 8), Martin’s girlfriend Ruby Allen was furious with Stacey for delivering a reading as he was lowered into the ground.

Despite being drunk at the beginning of the day, Stacey composed herself and read her daughter Lilly Slater’s speech after her emotions got the better of her.

With the pair getting into an argument at the wake, another confrontation between Stacey and Ruby occurred at the allotment.

Ruby demanded to know what happened in Martin’s final moments, but Stacey refused to reveal that Martin was planning on leaving her.

Thing went for bad to worse for Stacey when she discovered Lilly drunk, who was persuaded by Avani Nandra-Hart to hit the bottle.

Failing to get back on the same page with Lilly, who is furious with her for leaving for several weeks to grieve away from their family, Stacey discovered at the end of the episode that Martin’s stall has been set on fire.

While Ruby is certainly the prime suspect, those on the EastEnders Reddit page aren’t so sure that she would go that far to get back at Stacey.

@tennents_N_Grouse said: “I reckon it’s either Tommy or Lily- Ruby is too obvious.” @glum-Interaction8968 added: “So is there going to be some sort of twist whereby it wasn’t Ruby who set it on fire?”

@smellsLikePetrichors wrote: “It feels too obvious for it to have been Ruby that torched the memorial. I’m actually gonna go with Joel. They kept harping on about how he doesn’t understand the gravity of the situation, he was spoken to twice by his dad about having some respect and so if he really is an asshole child, torching a memorial for a laugh or because he got told off works.”

@uotlandishnessFew498 commented: “I’m leaning towards Tommy raging after being called out by Ross and then Alfie later at home. Could it be Lily? She’d be s***ing all over her siblings, and Martin’s memory, just to get back at Stacey. Besides, they had at least partially made up by that point. So I dunno.”

Many things remain unclear, but it looks like Martin’s death will continue to lead to drama in the coming weeks and months.
