Quick overview:
Let us know what you think in our weekend poll.
Manchester will soon have a new tallest tower.
Viadux 2a is a 246m-tall skyscraper featuring 452 flats and a 160-bedroom Nobu hotel, which is part-owned by actor Robert De Niro. Viadux 2b is a 23-storey block comprising affordable apartments only.
“As the location of not just the tallest tower outside London but a large number of high quality affordable homes, Viadux has the potential to become a symbol of this city’s aspirations and confidence in itself,” said Salboy boss Simon Ismail.
Opposition to the new tower came from neighbours, with one saying ‘Manchester needs to avoid another Night and Day Cafe situation’ amid concerns about the flats’ proximity to music venue Rebellion.
The mayor Andy Burnham said on Thursday: “I do not think we should be against the towers. In my view the city of Manchester, its status is rising all over the world.
“People are talking about this place. They see it as quite vibrant and somewhere people are coming to invest.
“The key thing for me is you do not allow gentrification and removing old communities and music venues. We keep Manchester as Manchester.
“You bring in the new but you do not lose what this place is all about which is a place for everybody and everybody can afford to live here.”
So, what do you think? Does Manchester have too many tall towers?
